# Hiring a Sloep for a Group: On the Water with 8, 10 or 12 People

A day on the water with a large group — family, friends, colleagues, or a stag or hen party. It sounds great, but it raises questions too. Will we all fit in one boat? What does it cost? And do we need a licence?

In this article we answer everything about hiring a sloep for groups of 8 to 12 people in the Weerribben-Wieden area.

## Which boat for which group size?

Not every boat suits large groups. Here's an overview:

| Group size | Recommended boat | Licence required? | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4–6 people | Large whisper boat or small sloep | No | Spacious |
| 6–8 people | Medium sloep | No | Comfortable |
| 8–10 people | Large sloep | No | Good, but tight at 10 |
| 10–12 people | XL sloep or two boats | No* | Two boats gives more space |

*For boats under 15 metres and maximum 20 km/h — that applies to all rental sloepen in this area.

### One large sloep or two smaller ones?

This is the key choice for groups over 8 people:

**One large sloep (10–12 people)**
- ✅ Everyone together
- ✅ One skipper, simpler
- ❌ Less room to move
- ❌ Fewer boats available in this size

**Two sloepen (2× 5–6 people)**
- ✅ More space per person
- ✅ You can make it a race (who gets there first?)
- ✅ Easier to handle
- ❌ Two skippers needed
- ❌ Group is split (but you sail side by side)

**Our advice:** For 8 people, one large sloep works perfectly. For 10+, two boats is often more fun — more space, more energy, and you can swap boats at a stop.

## What to look for when booking

### 1. Maximum capacity ≠ comfortable capacity
A sloep listed as "maximum 12 people" can technically fit 12. But it's cramped. For comfort, count on 2 fewer than the maximum.

### 2. Book in advance
Large sloepen are scarce. There are simply fewer of them than small boats. In peak season they're booked out weeks ahead. Book at least a week in advance — for weekends in July and August, two weeks is better.

### 3. Who's steering?
One person has to steer — and stay sober all day (there's an alcohol limit on the water of 0.5 promille). Agree in advance who that is and swap if needed.

### 4. Food and drinks
With a large group you'll want to picnic on the water. A sloep with a table is ideal. Bring a cool box — beer, wine and soft drinks, sandwiches, cheese, sausage, fruit. Everything tastes better on the water.

## What does a sloep for a group cost?

Prices vary by season and boat type:

| Boat | Capacity | Half day (4 hours) | Full day (8 hours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium sloep | 6–8 pers. | €75 – €125 | €100 – €175 |
| Large sloep | 8–10 pers. | €100 – €150 | €140 – €200 |
| XL sloep | 10–12 pers. | €125 – €175 | €160 – €230 |
| Two sloepen (2× 6 pers.) | 12 pers. total | €150 – €250 | €200 – €350 |

**Per person**, a sloep is surprisingly affordable. A large sloep for 10 people for a full day works out at €15–€20 per person — cheaper than a cinema ticket.

## Ideas for group outings on the water

### Birthday party
Decorate the sloep with bunting, bring a cake, and sail to a quiet spot to anchor. The birthday person steers (or deliberately doesn't — that's a gift too).

### Stag or hen party
Two sloepen, two teams, a route with challenges. Whoever reaches the finish first wins. Combine the cruise with lunch at the harbour in Blokzijl.

### Family day
Three generations on the water. Grandpa at the helm, the children spot birds, and the middle generation enjoys the peace. A sloep with a bimini is lovely if grandma doesn't want to sit in the sun all day.

### Company outing or team building
Away from the office, phones off, together on the water. Combine the cruise with a treasure hunt or photo competition. The informal setting leads to better conversations than any meeting room.

## The best route for groups

With a group you want:
- **Not too narrow water** — manoeuvring a large sloep in a narrow ditch is stressful
- **A stop along the way** — stretch your legs, use the toilet, grab an ice cream
- **Variety** — open water and picturesque villages

**Recommended route:** Start from Wanneperveen, sail via the wide canals towards Belt-Schutsloot (stop), on to the edges of Giethoorn and back. Total 3–4 hours, varied and suitable for large boats.

## Practical checklist for groups

- ☑️ Boat booked well in advance (at least 1 week ahead)
- ☑️ Skipper assigned (and sober)
- ☑️ Cool box with food and drinks
- ☑️ Sunscreen and hats
- ☑️ Rubbish bags (take everything back with you)
- ☑️ Extra clothing (it's colder on the water)
- ☑️ Bluetooth speaker (waterproof!) for music
- ☑️ Camera or phone for photos
- ☑️ Cash for the deposit

## Frequently asked questions

**Can we play music on the boat?**
Yes, but keep the volume reasonable. Loud music carries far on the water and isn't pleasant for other boaters and residents. A Bluetooth speaker at background level is fine.

**Can we swim from the sloep?**
On open water that's usually allowed. In canals and narrow waterways, not. Ask the rental company in advance.

**What if it rains?**
A sloep with a bimini (sun canopy) keeps you mostly dry in a shower. In heavy thunderstorms: moor immediately. In light rain: bring ponchos and carry on — it's part of the experience.

**Can I reserve two boats at the same time?**
Absolutely. It's even recommended for groups over 8. When booking, mention you're sailing together — the rental company will make sure both boats are ready at the same time.

## Summary

- There's a sloep for 8–12 people in every size
- For 10+ people: consider two boats for more comfort
- It costs €15–€20 per person for a full day
- Book in advance — large sloepen are scarce
- Make more of it: picnic, games, treasure hunt
