Belt-Schutsloot: boating through the undiscovered waterside village next to Giethoorn
Everyone knows Giethoorn. But almost nobody knows Belt-Schutsloot — the waterside village right next door that's at least as beautiful. Without the crowds, without the tourist coaches, without the queues at the boat rental.
Belt-Schutsloot is Giethoorn as it was fifty years ago: authentic, quiet, and best experienced from the water.
Where is Belt-Schutsloot?
Belt-Schutsloot lies in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, in the tip of Overijssel. The village is really two parts — Belt and Schutsloot — that grew together along the waterways. It lies south of Giethoorn, on the edge of Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden.
From Wanneperveen it's about 20 minutes by boat. From Giethoorn less than a quarter of an hour.
Reachable by water:
- From Wanneperveen: ~20 min boating
- From Giethoorn: ~15 min boating
- From Sint Jansklooster: ~25 min boating
What makes Belt-Schutsloot special?
It's a real waterside village
Like Giethoorn, Belt-Schutsloot was built along the water. Houses stand on canals instead of streets. Wooden bridges connect the yards. Thatched roofs rise above the reeds. The difference: people actually live here — it's not an open-air museum.
It's quiet — always
While Giethoorn draws 30,000 visitors on a fine Saturday in July, Belt-Schutsloot might see only a handful of boats. The waterways are empty, the water is still, and you hear only birds. This is how boating in this region ought to feel.
It's authentic
No souvenir shops, no tourist cruise boats, no car parks full of coaches. Belt-Schutsloot is an ordinary village where life on the water is still as it always was.
Nature is right around the corner
From Belt-Schutsloot you're quickly on the open water of the Wieden. Beulakerweide — a large lake with panoramic views — is a few minutes away. And the reed beds and hay meadows of the national park begin where the village ends.
What is there to see and do?
Cruising through the village
The main attraction is the village itself. Cruise slowly through the waterways, admire the houses, gardens, and bridges. Now and then someone waves from the garden. It's not spectacular — it's better than that. It's real.
Mooring for a walk
Belt-Schutsloot has mooring spots where you can tie up. Step ashore, walk a loop through the village, and step back aboard. There are no large terraces or restaurants, but that's precisely the point.
Continuing to Beulakerweide
The open lake south of Belt-Schutsloot. On a windless day the water is mirror-smooth. A perfect place to anchor, picnic, and enjoy the silence.
Spotting birds and otters
The area around Belt-Schutsloot is rich in birds. Great egrets, grey herons, buzzards, and — with luck — an otter. The otter population in Weerribben-Wieden is growing and Belt-Schutsloot lies in the middle of their habitat.
Combining with Giethoorn
Belt-Schutsloot is a perfect stop on a boating trip. Start in Wanneperveen, cruise via Belt-Schutsloot to Giethoorn (or the other way round) and make a full day of it.
Which boat should you take?
| Boat | Suitable? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Whisper boat | ★★★★★ | Quiet, fits the narrow waterways, perfect for the village |
| Canoe | ★★★★★ | Goes everywhere, ultimate silence, intimate |
| Sloep | ★★★★☆ | Good as part of a longer trip |
| SUP | ★★★★☆ | Fun in fine weather, unique perspective |
| Large motorboat | ★★☆☆☆ | Too big for the narrow village waterways |
Our advice: A whisper boat or canoe. Belt-Schutsloot's narrow waterways are at their best when you go slowly and quietly.
