Giethoorn, Venice of the North: a complete guide
Giethoorn is a water village in Overijssel, inside National Park Weerribben-Wieden. The nickname Venice of the North (Dutch: Venetië van Nederland) is not a slogan we invented. The old village has no through-roads: you move by water, on a footpath, or across one of the hundreds of wooden bridges.
We have rented boats since 1972 from Veneweg 199 in Wanneperveen, 3 km by water from those canals. This is the briefing we give at the jetty: why the village is called that, what the nickname does not promise, and how to get there without joining the quay queue.
Why is Giethoorn called the Venice of the North?
Three things you see from a boat before anyone mentions a guidebook:
- Canals instead of streets. Farmhouses sit on small islands. Until well into the twentieth century the punter was everyday transport.
- Bridges. Almost every yard has its own crossing. From a sloop you stop counting.
- Thatched roofs on the water. The postcard view is the real village, not a set.
It is not Venice in scale. There are no palaces, no costumed gondoliers and no city of 400,000 people. It is a small Dutch peat village that happens to be built on water. Visitors who know that are less disappointed and see more.

What you see on the water
The famous core is short: the Binnenpad and the village canal run for roughly two kilometres. That is where the thatched farms sit closest together. The speed limit in the village is 6 km/h — a local rule, not atmosphere copy.
A visit from the water feels different from a visit from the car park:
- You boat toward the picture, instead of being dropped inside it.
- You see reedland and lakes first, then the first bridges, then the crowds.
- You can continue to Belt-Schutsloot when the village is full.
From Wanneperveen an electric sloop takes about 1.5 hours one way (3 km by water). Round trip with a stop is 3–4 hours. That fits a day hire; it is not a ten-minute hop. Prices and boat rules: Giethoorn boat rental.

How to visit without the worst of the queue
Driving into the village centre is the busiest option: paid parking, often full in July and August, then a walk to the water.
A skippered canal tour in the village is the shortest introduction. You sit, you listen, you see the core. Nijenhuis does not run those tours — we rent boats without a skipper.
Self-drive from Wanneperveen is what we sell: free parking at the jetty, a five-to-ten-minute briefing, no licence (boats under 15 m, max. 20 km/h). The 8- and 10-person electric sloops may enter the village canals; Classic Tender 570 and 720 may not.

Crowds and timing
Peak days bring up to 30,000 visitors to a village of a few thousand residents. Leave Wanneperveen at 09:00 and you reach the canals around 10:30, before most coaches. Timing detail: avoiding Giethoorn crowds.
What the nickname does not mean
- It is not a city. Plan for a compact village, not a full urban centre.
- It is not quiet nature if you only do the village canal. The quiet sits in the Weerribben around it.
- It is not an “Italian” destination. Food is Dutch: pancakes, fish, a terrace on the water.
Combine Giethoorn with Belt-Schutsloot or an afternoon on the Belterwijde and you see why the water village was once so still — and why the nickname stuck.
