Giethoorn Too Busy? How to Enjoy a Peaceful Cruise through the Weerribben
It is an open secret: Giethoorn can get incredibly busy. On sunny summer days, up to 30,000 visitors flock to the village. The canals are packed with boats, queues form at rental companies, and the tranquillity Giethoorn was once known for is hard to find.
But the good news: the Weerribben-Wieden area is enormous — more than 10,000 hectares. Giethoorn is just a small part of it. If you know where to go, you can be ten minutes from the village cruising on mirror-smooth water, with only reed birds for company.
Why is Giethoorn so busy?
Giethoorn is a victim of its own success. Social media, travel guides and international fame as "the Venice of the North" have put the village on the map — literally. Coachloads of tourists are dropped off daily at the main entrance.
The problem is not the village — it is the way most visitors experience Giethoorn:
- Everyone arrives at the same time (11:00 – 15:00)
- Everyone starts at the same place (the main entrance by the car parks)
- Everyone takes the same route (the most famous canal)
The solution is simple: do it differently.
Strategy 1: Start outside Giethoorn
Most rental companies are in the centre of Giethoorn. Logical — that is where the visitors are. But that also means you start from the busiest point.
By starting from a village in the surrounding area — such as Wanneperveen, Belt-Schutsloot or Sint Jansklooster — you begin on calm water. You can still cruise to Giethoorn, but via the back, where hardly any tourists go.
The difference is enormous. Where you boat bumper-to-bumper in the centre of Giethoorn, from Wanneperveen you have the water to yourself for the first 30 minutes.
Strategy 2: Go at the right time
| Time | Crowds in Giethoorn |
|---|---|
| 08:00 – 10:00 | Quiet — most visitors have not arrived yet |
| 10:00 – 11:00 | Getting busier |
| 11:00 – 15:00 | Peak crowds — packed canals, waiting times |
| 15:00 – 16:00 | Starting to empty out |
| 16:00 – 20:00 | Quiet — the buses are gone, the light is beautiful |
Early morning and late afternoon are by far the most beautiful. The light is softer, the water is calmer, and you hear birds instead of engines.
Strategy 3: Choose the right day
| Day | Crowds |
|---|---|
| Monday | ★★☆☆☆ Quiet |
| Tuesday – Thursday | ★★☆☆☆ Quiet |
| Friday | ★★★☆☆ Moderate |
| Saturday | ★★★★★ Busy |
| Sunday | ★★★★☆ Busy |
| Public holidays | ★★★★★ Very busy |
Boating midweek is a completely different experience. The difference between a Tuesday in June and a Saturday in July is like visiting a different village.
Strategy 4: Discover the surroundings instead of just the village
Giethoorn is beautiful, but it is only the best-known part of a much larger area. These places are at least as impressive — and you share them with almost no one:
Belt-Schutsloot
A small village with wooden bridges and thatched roofs, reachable by water. It feels like Giethoorn fifty years ago — quiet, authentic and not touristy.
The Weerribben
The northern part of the national park. Endless reed fields, narrow ditches you just fit through, and a chance to spot otters. You will not encounter tourist boats here.
Kalenberg
A village in the middle of the Weerribben that feels truly accessible only by water. Picturesque, quiet and completely underrated.
Blokzijl
A former Zuiderzee town with a historic harbour. Moor for coffee or lunch, stroll through the narrow streets and cruise back. A full-day outing.
The Beulakerweide
An open lake with sweeping views. On a calm day, the water is mirror-smooth. Perfect for a picnic on the boat.
Strategy 5: Always book in advance
This applies to every location, but especially on busy days. Without a reservation, you risk all boats being rented out. On popular Saturdays in July and August, boats are sometimes fully booked days in advance.
Booking online gives you:
- Certainty that a boat will be ready
- Choice of the boat type you want
- Often a discount compared to booking on site
- No waiting time on arrival
When is it truly quiet?
The quietest months with the best weather:
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| April | Changeable, 12–16°C | ★☆☆☆☆ | Quiet, but cool |
| May | Pleasant, 15–20°C | ★★☆☆☆ | Ideal — warm enough, quiet |
| June | Warm, 18–24°C | ★★★☆☆ | Nice weather, slightly busier |
| July | Warm, 20–27°C | ★★★★★ | Peak season — busy |
| August | Warm, 20–26°C | ★★★★★ | Peak season — busy |
| September | Pleasant, 16–22°C | ★★☆☆☆ | Ideal — autumn colours, quiet |
| October | Cool, 10–16°C | ★☆☆☆☆ | Quiet, shorter days |
May and September are the golden months: pleasant weather, long daylight hours and hardly any crowds.
